Fairweather Maintains YCF Lead at YCF 100 as Mullier Wins at Ripley!

Event 15 of the Fulford Cycles Time Trial League was the hilly, short and intense 8 mile Ripley-Markington loop. The high winds had reduced the field to twenty-one riders and for Veteran Championship leader, Nova’s Duncan Mullier, it was like season’s gone by with the main competition being teammate Simon Ketteringham. Mullier prevailed in the difficult conditions in a time of 19:53, thirty-nine seconds ahead of Ketteringham (20:32), to take his fourth win of the season and make the 2011 vets’ title a virtual certainty. Ketteringham’s highest placing of the season drew him level in the championship in fourth place with the injured Dave Morris. Gary Marks took his first ever podium with 21:21, ten seconds ahead of Rob Senior. Nova road-racer, Paul Lehan, made a rare appearance on the TT scene to finish fifth in 22:17, just two seconds ahead of Ian Chapman. Triathelete, Walter Busuttil came home in seventh in 22:24, ahead of returning from injury, super-veteran Tony Kent (22:52), who had a near miss in the strong winds with a tractor. Richard Buckle and Dave Barker rounded out the top ten. Story of the night was Nova’s Chris Mawer interrupting a holiday in Scotland to make a 360 mile round trip to compete and to maintain his 100% starts record, breaking Mullier’s commute record of the week before when he returned from the comparatively close Lakes. Unfortunately the wind played it’s part, tugging at a number of competitors deep section and disc wheels and Mawer found the bike difficult to control and had a rare excursion outside of the top ten with 24:01 and fourteenth place.

In the ladies event only double champion, Joanne Ketteringham and teammate Alison Sarmiento braved the conditions. Joanne maintaining her 100% winning streak of fourteen wins in fourteen starts in a new ladies’ record time of 23:35. Rookie Alison’s time of 25:45 on a technical and hilly course in poor conditions was truly impressive.

After winning in mid-week, Mullier’s luck finally ran out at the weekend in the Yorkshire Cycling Federation 100 mile TT. Consisting of two 30 mile loops on the A168/A19 and then two 20 mile loops on the rolling roads around Cundall and Raskelf it played out in almost perfect conditions. Mullier attempting his first 100 mile TT, a feat of pacing and mind over-matter as well as endurance, was making steady progress when he punctured at the 50 mile mark and spent five miles toiling on a fully deflated tyre before finding aid, only for it to deflate again. After eventually replacing the wheel Mullier soldiered on to finish the event in 4:36:13 (2:02:30 50 miles) in 26th place. Super Veteran, Mike Shacklock of Yorkshire Road Club, used every ounce of his vast experience to complete the course in a stunning time of 4:15:18 (2:04:40 50 miles) in 16th place, hardy slowing down in the difficult second half. Yorkshire Velo’s Nigel Goscinski made up for failing to finish in the 100 mile National Championships earlier this summer. He too was of a mind to finish no matter what and did so in 4:07:43 (1:56:47) in 9th place. The day undoubtedly belonged to Yorkshire Road Club’s Ian Fairweather. He smashed five minutes off his personal best to finish third in an amazing time of 3:51:42 (1:55:19), the split time showing astounding pacing with hardly any difference between the first and second fifty. The result maintained 2010 YCF champion Fairweather’s lead in the 2011 YCF competition. The event was won by Team Swift’s Joel Wainman in 3:40:46 (1:49:27) ahead of Finsbury Park CC’s Matt Molloy 3:48:40.
